Sunday 31st March – Hedge Laying – Margam Park

This Sunday we’ll be heading back to Margam Park for round 4 of our hedge laying task! Hedge laying is an ancient technique that forms a living field boundary providing food, shelter and serving as a vital wildlife corridor for many birds, mammals and insects. If you’d like to get involved then please text your full name to 07450700214 and whether you would like a seat on the minibus. The minibus leaves at 8:45am from Forest Farm, 9am outside of Cardiff Museum and 9:15 from Cathays train station (Park Place) to meet on site at Margam Park for 10am. Please bring a packed lunch and a mug if you would like a hot drink (We’ll supply the hot water!) Keep an eye on the weather forecast and dress appropriately. Sunday 17th March – Habitat Management – Merthyr Mawr

This week there is a change to the scheduled task. We’ll be heading back to Merthyr Mawr to help with managing the habitat by removing Birch. Ensuring the habitat is maintained as a sand dune is important as certain flora and fauna species will only flourish in this environment – removing the Birch trees will prevent succession and allow this habitat to thrive. If you’d like to get involved then please text your full name to 07450700214 and whether you would like a seat on the minibus. The minibus leaves at 8:45am from Forest Farm, 9am outside of Cardiff Museum and 9:15am from Cathays train station to meet on site at Merthyr Mawr for 10am. Sunday 10th March – Footpath Maintenance / Drainage Management – Newport Wetlands

This Sunday we’ll be at the Newport Wetlands helping to maintain the footpaths and creating drainage channels. A well maintained footpath is vital as it allows people to enjoy the beautiful reserve whilst preventing potential damage to wildlife habitats. We’ll also be helping to dig drainage channels for a new pond created to benefit the Great crested newt! If you’d like to get involved then please text your full name to 07450700214 and whether you would like a seat on the minibus. The minibus leaves at 8:45am from Forest Farm, 9am outside of Cardiff Museum and 9:15am from Cathays train station to meet on site at Newport Wetlands for 10am. Please bring a packed lunch and a mug if you would like a hot drink (We’ll supply the hot water!) Keep an eye on the weather forecast and dress appropriately; you’ll almost certainly need wellies for this task so if you own a pair please bring them, for everyone else please let us know in advance (including your shoe size) and we should be able to accommodate you. Sunday 3rd March – Hegde Laying – Margam Park

This Sunday we’ll be back at Margam Park for Round 2 of Hedge Laying. We broke in the hedge last week and this week we’ll begin pleaching; the art of partially cutting the tree and laying it down horizontally to form a living barrier! All work is subject to a survey prior to the task beginning to ensure no birds are nesting within the hedge.
